Book now Book now Children’s ‘First Experiences’ of music in Wales As well as the ‘Live Experiences’ opportunities, a core vision of Wales’ National Plan for Music is the ‘First Experiences’ programme, which aims to give pupils in Wales the opportunity to play, sing, take part in and create music. As part of this initiative, the Welsh government provided every Year 3 pupil in Wales with a pBuzz Cymru instrument which have been manufactured in Wales. In 2022, Swansea Music began a revolutionary approach to whole-class music: empowering classroom teachers in Year 3 to deliver music classes. With training led by the music service and Chris Fower, along with pBuzz resources available on Charanga, primary teachers without musical experience delivered beginner brass lessons to their students. BuzzAlong Bonanza Their efforts were celebrated at the BuzzAlong Bonanza held at the Brangwyn Hall, where hundreds of students performed tunes that they had learned with the backing of a big band. For the 2024-25 school year, Year 3 pupils across the region are once again playing a primary instrument like pBuzz. Teachers are again getting support and CPD sessions to enrich their knowledge and give more young people the chance to experience music-making. But what about last year’s cohort of buzzers and blowers? In 10 schools across Swansea, a pilot scheme has been launched that will see the pupils progressing from pBuzz onto two new instruments: pBone and pCornet. Building on the brass fundamentals that they learned in Year 3, pupils across the 10 selected schools will continue to learn brass in the whole-class environment. With Chris Fower and Swansea Music staff, pupils are taking their learning further and in Summer 2024, we will celebrate this journey with the Buzz Bonanza in conjunction with Swansea International Jazz Festival! We look forward to sharing the date and venue with you shortly!
